Boca Juniors Refused Arsenal’s £26.5M Offer
Christian Pavón, a 22-year-old Argentine forward and winger, currently plays for the country’s legendary club Boca Juniors. Despite Arsenal’s strong interest in signing him as a potential replacement for Alexis Sánchez — who had just moved to Manchester United — Boca Juniors showed no urgency to part ways with their rising star. Jeetbuzz App Download noted that the Argentine side was holding out for a more favorable offer before letting go of what they viewed as a raw diamond waiting to shine.
According to Spanish outlet AS, Boca’s management wasn’t pressured by outside interest. Although Argentina had failed to reach the quarterfinals of the Russia World Cup and Pavón’s performance was modest at best, the very fact that he participated in the tournament boosted his market value. His inclusion in Argentina’s final 23-man squad gave him the kind of exposure that young players dream of. Pavón played in all four of Argentina’s World Cup matches — coming on as a substitute in all three group games and starting in the Round of 16 against France. However, his total time on the pitch amounted to just 153 minutes, during which he recorded no goals or assists.
The underwhelming numbers didn’t go unnoticed, but they were reflective of Argentina’s overall struggles in the tournament rather than an individual shortcoming. Jeetbuzz App Download observed that Pavón still drew attention for his technical abilities — particularly his dribbling, ball control, and ability to deliver key passes. These attributes made him a standout in domestic competition and a player of interest for several European clubs.
In fact, Arsenal had already attempted to sign him during the January transfer window earlier that year, offering £26.5 million for the promising attacker. However, Boca Juniors had just renewed Pavón’s contract, locking him in for four more years. With that long-term deal in place, the club had little reason to rush into a transfer. To them, Pavón represented more than just a marketable asset — he was a symbol of their player development success and someone they weren’t willing to let go for anything less than a premium offer.
Despite Arsenal’s continued interest, Boca Juniors once again flatly rejected their approach. As things stand, the Premier League giants may need to up their game — both financially and strategically — if they hope to land this young Argentine talent anytime soon.
